Breaking: Massive Youth-Led Protests Shake Kathmandu over Social Media Ban and Government Corruption
Thousands of young Nepalis, mainly from Generation Z, have erupted in massive protests in Kathmandu, Nepal, against the government's recent ban on several major social media platforms and widespread corruption within the administration. The protests, which began as digital outrage, quickly spilled onto the streets, gathering momentum and thousands of demonstrators rallying mainly at Maitighar and surrounding areas, marching towards the Parliament building in Kathmandu.
The government's decision last week to block 26 social media platforms, including popular sites like Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, WhatsApp, and X, citing their failure to register with Nepal's Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, triggered the protests. Many young people interpret the ban as a censorship tactic to silence dissent and critical voices, which galvanized their resistance online and offline.
Protestors, waving national flags and chanting slogans, voiced their anger not only over the social media prohibitions but also against the entrenched institutional corruption that has plagued Nepal for decades. Many of the youth emphasized that while the social media ban was the catalyst, the deeper grievance was the government's “authoritarian attitude” and systemic misuse of power.
The protests have seen clashes with police and security forces, who used tear gas, water cannons, and rubber bullets to disperse demonstrators after some pushed past barricades and stormed restricted zones near the Parliament. Tragically, at least one protester was killed, and dozens, including students in school uniforms, were injured. The unrest prompted the government to impose a curfew in Kathmandu and deploy the Nepali Army in an attempt to restore order.
Despite phone and internet disruptions, protest organizers skillfully used alternative digital platforms to mobilize demonstrators and share protest routes and safety information. The movement has expanded beyond Kathmandu, with youth-led demonstrations appearing in other parts of the country demanding transparency, digital rights, accountability, and an end to corruption.
This youth-led "Gen Z Revolution" symbolizes a powerful call for change in Nepal, with young citizens determined to challenge decades of political corruption and governmental overreach while advocating for freedoms in the digital space and political accountability.
The protests continue to develop as the government holds emergency security meetings and the country braces for ongoing unrest, with the voices of Nepal’s youth becoming impossible to ignore.
This moment marks one of Nepal's largest youth-led protests in years, reflecting wider dissatisfaction with governance and the increasing role of social media as a platform for civic engagement and resistance.
